our prison has decided to go through with a tobacco free enviorment for staff and inmates, it starts on march first and i already have seen a spike in tension, i have worked the hole for about a year an a half, me and my partner have always had a firm grip on hole but within the last few weeks the tobacco has been drying up and the animals are restless . i am sure that it will get worse before it gets better. i was wondering if any else has had the same feelings.

We in fact have a smoking in ban in the whole of the UK. In prison or not. You are not allowed to smoke in public places, or any open space enclosed on 3 sides ( Sports stadiums etc....). In prison however the cons seem to have more rights than your law abiding citizen. They are allowed to smoke in their own cells (it is deemed as their own personal space, go figure) this means that the smoke, which funnily enough doesnt obey signs or directions, whafts into the halls and fills them full of smoke, breaking all the laws that were originally put in place to protect the staff from passive smoking. Some of our cons are so tightly wound that if they banned tobacco all together we would have a riot on our hands. They already (huge misconception) believe that they have no rights as it is! interesting to see how you guys are handling it?
We are smoke free and it's pain in the dang side! Everyday we confiscate so much tobacco that we can start our own cigarette brand. They will find a way to smuggle it and get it around, we've been dealing with it for about a year now and everyday same thing. We shook down a wing on Tuesday night by Wednesday afternoon it was back...ya'll get ready.
Years ago Idaho passed a law banning tobacco products from state property. According to the warden at the time, the inmates had accsess to smoking cessation classes, and patches. As a non-smoker I think that is great that I work in a smoke free enviroment. I just have to drive through the huge smoke cloud in front of the front gate on my way to and from work
We have been "Smoke Free"(???) for 10 years or so now. Before the tobacco ban, the worse we saw was maybe a little bit of Green Leafy stuff. NOW... Once they figured out how to get tobacco in, they started with the bigger stuff. Now they are shooting up in the dorms. Tension spikes... Oh yes. Especially when the supply dries up for a bit.
I hated sitting in a dorm full of smoke but it was better then some of the problems we have now.

All TN CCA prisons are smokefree and it isn't very hard on the i/ms. we regularly find tobacco and other drugs during searches but they get a Class A Disiplinary for it and it stops them from making parole the next time they go up.

my instituion is also going smoke free as of march first. we have seen a rise in smuggling tobacco into seg, but my main concern is working on walks and the yard come mid may early june when the tensions get really high on the yard.
