Apparently we are going back to 2 days(06:30-18:30), a24 hr. break("flip day") and then 2 12 hr. nights(16:30-06:30).As I mentioned before we did these for over 3 years. They are unbelievable. Most people built up their sick leave. And its easier on your vacation days. On 8or 9 hrs., 7-3,7-4 to take a week off is 56hrs.On these 12hrs., to take a strech off is @ 48-50hrs. And that gives youalmost 2 weeks off buy taking 1 stretch.

Permalink Reply by Trisha Smith on June 14, 2011 at 7:31pm We have every shift you could want. There is a shift for everyones taste. We have 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15 hour shifts depending on what wing your on. And everyone is happy about it. But again we have alot to say about when we want to work and what shifts we want. I work every kind of shift. I work approximately 12-13 days a month because of our 15 and 12 hour shifts.
In our smaller jails ( with 15-25 inmates) we work 24 hour shifts and goes to work 6-7 days a month.
Permalink Reply by john rardin on July 10, 2011 at 9:15pm At Whiteville Correctional Facility in Whiteville, TN most of us are on 12s. 12s ARE GREAT! I love 12 hour shifts because you get every other weekend off (2 on, 2 off, every other weekend) and our shift change time allows me to work full-time AND go to school full-time. The shift goes by pretty fast and even though we spend 1/4 of our lives working, it doesn't feel like it. I love my job, but it's nice to spend a fair amount of time away from it too.
We have been on 12's for several years... and it works well! We are now trying a new 3 day work week that will be 12 hour shifts with one hour manatory OT.. (39 hour work week)This gives all staff 4 consecetave days off a week.. so far so good.
We work 12 hour shifts at a County Jail. We currently work 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off, 2 on, 2 off. Works out very nicely since we can plan vacations at anytime in the future with this set schedule. We work 80 hours, and one scheduled day every other week we only work an 8 hour shift which is covered by a part time officer - same short day for 2 officers. Lately being short staffed there are no short days so we end up getting 4 hours of overtime every pay period. Scheduling is very easy, and it allows more chances for overtime if wanted. Obviously we have more days off than if we worked 8 hour shifts. Saves fuel. Saves on meals, etc.
I came to this setting from an EMS agency - I worked 24 hour shifts there, which came to 96 hours every 2 weeks. Only worked 104 days a year - but we also got to sleep on our down time.
Our whole department is set for the same shift change - except for dispatch. Works very nicely, 12's are so much better than 8's - at least in my opinion.
