Likes: More days off.

Dislikes: Days when nothing is happening go on FOREVER.

Days when a lot happens kick your ass.

It's purely a personal preference thing. Some people love it. Some hate it. I prefer 8 hr shifts myself.

i work in san diego at donovan state prison it was spoken of doing it here too but its so crazy here we still have 3 day furloughs going on, admin support is weak, and now they want to release alot of these knuckle heads to lower security jails, just last week some freash paroles got out robbed a apple electronics store  1 got shot the other wounded, i finally had to buy a concealment off duty weapon because they moved a parole office 1 block from where i live  so i constantly see the knucklehead convicts going back and forth, and i unfortunetly ran into 3 convicts that knew me  so now i pack just incase,, 12 hour shifts would be the bomb
I work at Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in West Virginia and we did 12 hour shifts once before.  It was awesome, I wish we would go back to 12's to be honest.  Having three days off every week is great and if you work the schedule right it works out to where you would have every other friday, saturday, and sunday off.  I mean lets say you work Monday and Tuesday, you're off Wednesday and Thursday, work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Then you are off Monday and Tuesday, work Wednesday and Thursday, then off Friday Saturday and Sunday.  Granted the busy days do suck, but on 12's you automatically get 8 hours OT every week (or every two depending on the scheduling) and if you want to pick up a little more just work like 8 hours on your day off or even one of your days off. Hope this helps
the state here is so set with their regulations it would be doubtful, i use to work for homeland security before this job and had 12 shift you could volunteer for it i had sat sun monday off best days especially sunday monday, plus ot here and there weather is cold and rainy here, trying to keep up onthe news of all those african families that got murdered hundreds of men women and kids  have a blessed day    watch your back

I take it you have 8hr shifts . 12 hr shifts cut positions out and works against families at home . And don't have a spouse working the same field of work and kids at home , there will be real turmoil with that arrangement . Single parents , if you don't have family to help take care of your kids you will have trouble . Rotating days off , just try and find childcare . You can't put a price tag on relationships and kids so 8 hour shifts are really more productive . But if your single and or selfish then 12 hour shifts are what you are going to want . Unfortuneately we are creating a society of pimps and whores and 12 hour shifts are one of the products . With 8 hour shifts you have  permanent job assignments if you work at a place that has a lot of officers ( state correctional or a large county complex ) , with 12 hrs you don't . So certain job assignments become reward versus discipline assignments that your shift supervisor can or will do . 8 hours limits shift supervisors on how they can treat staff but 12 hours gives them free latitude . With 12 hour shifts " clicks " get established more so than 8 hours .

Up here in Bluenose country we have 12hr. shifts at the Federal facility where I work. Love them. A few people work the 2-3-3-2 as mentioned here. They have a certain dayshift post and a certain backshift post they do.They also have Sub. shifts.(no assignments, just fill in). Most of the 12 hr.  officers work a 4 on, 5 off rotation. 2 nights (18:30-06:30) a flip day(24 hr. break) the 2 day shifts (06:30 -18:30) then 5 days off. This is great for carpooling or time home.Especially with the price of gas and if you live any distance away.I agree when you are at work it kinda eats your day up.But its better than the 8 hr. shifts we used to work(7 on, 3 off, 7 on, 4 off). Our roster basically works all the 24 hr. posts. We also have SUB. shifts. If someone books of you fill in.If everyone comes to work you grab a portable and make your self useful.Have worked 12hr.s for @ 8 yrs. now and its greatYou can still sign up for overtime on your rest days or do a 4 hr. shift extension.
Here in Florida, they are piloting 12 hour shifts at a prison right now to see how it will run, Then we will vote on it. From what I've heard from the union rep. is it's pretty much going to happen here because all the big houses are all in on the 12s and the smaller ones are 50/50. My personal opinion is bring it on it would a long day or night but more days off and for those who don't have the weekends off it will give them every other weekend off.

Thanks for all the posts...I appreciate everyones take on it.  How do your departments handle OT?

did you about the c/o that got murdered in south dakata by two convicts trying to escape

I am currently Monday through Friday but I would prefer being on twelve hour shifts. I like them because of the time off is better depending on the rotation. We had a couple of different rotations. The first one we had 7 days off in a row and it was a weekly rotation from days to nights but our new Adminstrator didn't like it. Now we rotate days to nights on a monthly basis with 4 days off being the most. Our pay periods go from Friday to Thursday in 2 week incraments totalling 85.75 hours every 2 weeks.

I guess it would depend on the set up of the rotation you are looking at.

No Erick, I havn't heard about that one...I'll google it and check it out.

Likes=

more time off (Something like 67 more days a year)

8 hour days drain you, so another 4 really shouldn't make much difference

Dislikes=

Harder to schedule vacations, 12 hours vs 8 hours of leave and stricter staffing pattern.
